DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY

INFORMATION SESSIONS

HFC PHASE DOWN

and other changes to the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Program

Australia’s hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phase down began on 1 January 2018. The HFC phase down is a gradual reduction in the maximum amount of HFCs permitted to be imported into Australia. HFCs are the most commonly used gases in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and are also used in fire suppression, foam blowing, aerosols and medical applications. Phasing down imports of HFCs will lead directly to reduced emissions of these global warming gases. The HFC phase down was announced by the Government in June 2016 along with other measures to reduce emissions and increase the efficiency of the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Program.

The Department of the Environment and Energy is running a series of information sessions around Australia in 2018. These sessions will discuss what the HFC phase down will mean for HFC users including equipment owners and technicians, and other changes to the program to reduce emissions and increase efficiency. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions.
